Acupuncture, how does it work?

Acupuncture involves the insertion of needles into acupuncture points which correspond to organ and body function. The points lie on invisible energy channels. Physical, emotional and environmental disorders are said to alter the flow of energy, making it either too fast or too slow, or it may be blocked or diverted to the wrong organs.

The needles unblock, increase or decrease the flow of energy in the channels, thus restoring the body back to health and well-being. They reminding the body to heal itself at a fundamental level.

Research has shown that acupuncture boosts the immune system, improves the functioning of the autonomous nervous system and stimulates the production of feel good factors in the body, i.e. endophins, seratonin and enkephalin.

Does it hurt?

The acupuncture needles are much finer than those used to draw blood or give IV injections.

They are inserted into the skin quickly and painlessly. They are then rotated between finger and thumb to alter the flow of energy at the acupuncture points.

You may feel slight numbness or tingling sensations over each point, as it connects with the appropriate channel.

The treatment may also involve the warming of the channels through moxibustion, cupping or electrostimulation.
